A leader is someone who has the capability to
have a vision for a brighter future and is able to set goals for himself and
his team to work upon. A leader has certain qualities that sway everyone to
follow him. A leader does not pretend to be right always and gives
opportunities to all his teammates to share their opinions. He also guides them
as such that they can make use of their skills fully and can contribute to the
team.
A lot of opinions have been shared by many on
whether a leader is born or made. But if we consider that a baby is born with a
clean slate and is filled up with knowledge as it grows then we must agree that
a leader is not born but is made through experience.
A lot of the characteristics of a leader are
obtained through influence from someone the person has been watching or have
been with. Many learn from present leaders to become future leaders. Hence,
inspiration plays an important role in making a leader.
The legendary American football coach, Vince Lombardi, once said “Leaders aren’t born, they are made. And
they are made just like anything else, through hard work”.
From the above saying we can understand that
one needs to make a lot of effort to become a leader or to mold a leader out of
someone. A person has to prove oneself to others to be called a leader. One has
to go through tough times to understand the complexities of becoming a leader.
If we take the example of Mahatma Gandhi, he was not a born leader. He learned
to be a leader through the various experiences he had been through. The first
instance of his leadership came after he was thrown out of the 1st
class compartment of a train as he was of brown skin and only white skinned
people were allowed in that compartment. Due to his background in law he had
the knowledge of his rights and the rights of those who were discriminated. He
became an activist and fought against the discrimination. He got inspired by
teachings of the Bhagwad Gita and tried to practice them in his life. Through
all of his learning and experience he became one of the greatest leaders this
world has ever seen. Everything he was was because of the situation he came
across and the experience and knowledge he gained throughout his lifetime. It
should also be added that a lot of his leadership has to do with the support he
got by the people. If he wouldn’t have had that support he may not have become
such a great leader.
Thus, we can conclude by saying that leaders
are not born but are made and can be made through experience, knowledge, and
encouragement by the people.
