Mental Health- A Serious Issue

Mental health is a serious threat to society and there is nothing as important and crucial as mental health in any person’s life. Today we count success with name, fame, money, knowledge, etc. but we forget about mental health, and the main character to focus while talking of mental health is “depression”. According to a report furnished by WHO, around 2.20 lakhs people commit suicide due to depression which is all in all related to mental health and wellness.

While talking in detail about Mental Health, it won’t be deniable to acknowledge that bad mental health is the most crucial reason of disturbance in daily activities like the feelings of a person; his/her thought process and the way of handling other basic activities like eating, sleeping and more like that. These changes in a person when continuously repeat themselves for almost two weeks confirm that the person is going to ruined mental health or to be precise is in depression and thereby needs immediate attention. A person with ruined mental health starts feeling empty inside, hopeless, helplessness, sad, anxiety, irritation, fatigued, but in most of the cases giving up on life by taking any big step like doing suicide is the extreme level of warning that the person with such thoughts is going through depression and needs a quick consultation, care, and attention.

People in India fear to visit doctors amid their ruined mental health because of the taboo our society has imposed on visiting and consulting doctors or psychiatrists for ruined mental health. People in society do not take mental health issues seriously and ignore it at a large scale which is why there is a dearth of awareness and confidence to accept the fact that someone is going through bad mental health or serious issue like depression. If not taken due care, the sufferer can face severe consequences, in the long run, is what the society never takes cognizance of. Health issues like fever, infections, and other medical ailments are a normal thing to suffer from according to the society but when it comes to spoilt mental health, which is far more important than other medical ailments, nobody pays attention and never come up with accurate and apt solutions to deal with it. In a few cases, the so-called society was also found shaming the depressed by giving him/her the tag of mentally unwell, mad, psycho, and what not.

In a recent case, a well-known actor and a very talented person namely, Sushant Singh Rajput committed suicide, of which his ruined mental health is being predicted to be the reason behind such a big step. It was really saddening news for the whole country and an incident that showed all of us a mirror and posed as a warning about what ruined mental health can do to a person.

We must all take mental health seriously and talk and educate our family, friends, and near and dear ones about how can bad mental health affect a person and what to do if someone’s going through bad and ruined mental health, through different channels. We must all come forward and create enough awareness about what should be done about an unhealthy mind and also that it can be cured and relieved with proper and timely care, consultation, and medication.

The main reason why people get into a state of serious mental problems like depression etc. is that they try, run away and avoid these issues when they actually need to handle such issues with due care and concern.

What to do and whom to consult?

The main question that arises is that what must be done if you or someone around you is going through bad mental health and whom to consult or reach out for help.

First and foremost, a person suffering from bad mental health must take this problem in cognizance and introspect and realize the core reason behind this issue. Some people who are in the initial stages of bad mental health do not really need medical assistance or consultation if they have friends, family and well-wishers to talk to and solve their problem. But in the cases where one doesn’t have enough people to talk to about his/her problems or agony or is in a later stage of mental illness, visiting a doctor or reaching out for optimum medical assistance stands as the need of the hour. Consulting a doctor and openly telling him/her the core reason for your ruined mental health helps the doctor understand the issue and provide a reliable solution to your problems and apt ways to deal with it as well.

But, in case the one suffering from bad mental health or depression is unable to visit or consult a doctor because of any reason, he/she has another option in the form of several NGOs who have various qualified and well-trained personnel to help the depressed. Some of the names of such NGOs are NIMHANS, AASHRA, SNEHA, and many more. These NGOs operate 24*7 and can be contacted in case of any discrepancies that relate to mental issues.

Apart from consultation from a doctor or any organization dealing with such an issue, there are a few ways like meditation, the enchantment of mantras, introspection to make you realize the core issue, and help normalizing it on your own. However, this is not a reliable solution as everyone has a different interface and you never know what works for whom and what not.

As a responsible human being, it is our duty as well to constantly checking up on our loved ones and suggest them the right thing to be done. There are many among us who are going through such issues but are not comfortable discussing it with us. Therefore, it is our duty to create a plush environment in society and for the people going through such issues for them to openly discuss their bad mental health. Every time anyone of us takes a big step like giving up on his/her life by committing suicide, etc. all of us fail in the form of society.
