Patriarchy or male dominance?

Patriarchy is a social system in which the father or the eldest male is head of the family holding all the controls and power. A very common example to understand this system can be; when the family name comes, it comes from the men in the family.

Dr. Lerner views its establishment as a historical process that developed from 3100 B.C. to 600 B.C. in the Near East. She believes it arose partly from the practice of intertribal exchanges of women for acquiesced because it was functional for the tribe.

The basic characteristics of this system can be regarded as, the men hold primary power and predominate in roles of political leadership, moral authorities, social privilege, and control of properly while the women are subjugated.

Some of these societies are also patrilineal which means that property and title are inherited by the male lineage. Such kind of system creates disarray in society which leads a negative impact on the people.

Started as a system, patriarchy has now become a constraint to the society and is affecting the social system. The major effects are political leadership, religious institutions, economic systems, property ownership, business management, etc. All these have changed the patriarchal system into male dominance and so in such a society, the key roles of a woman are to be good daughters, good wives, and mothers. Such activities lower the confidence and self-esteem in women.

While observing it was found that the patriarchal system lowers the status of women and they also don’t acquire the position, value, love, respect, and care they deserve. In some cases, the women's conditions are so poor that their life is bounded around the boundaries of the kitchen and other household work. Mostly it is seen that they are ignored and ill-treated and aren't allowed to give suggestions and advice in any matter. Because of this, the cases of domestic violence, honor killing, rape has also increased.

The dominance in some areas has become a threat to the life of women's which has created a substandard society.

Male dominance not only affects the women instead it affects the whole society. There are women who are more talented than men but aren't allowed to work, of course, it's a loss to the woman but also a great loss to the society; there are many who are been killed when born just because they were born as a girl child but this too affects the society later on when they face the shortage of women while marrying their sons, many other cases can be seen.

But we should be aware that the more harm we do to others, one day it will all come back to us.

While observing it was found that patriarchy also has its advantages as in this system the men are assigned to take all the powers and which can be a plus point for everyone as the men are more socially, economically, and emotionally stable.

Men are more likely to cope up with pressure and hard work in such cases when compared to women. This also lessens the burden of women who already have a lot to deal with from the kitchen to the children and other household activities. But this can't prove that women can't be the head of families, they too can hold all the power and run their house; it's all up to the person and family what they are more likely to prefer.

So, it can be said that patriarchy isn't bad but male dominance is because society needs the involvement of men and women equally to balance it. But the current situation is making the patriarchy in its worst form so we need to understand the borderline between patriarchy and male dominance because an excess of anything is detrimental.

"Stop the dominance to stay safe from pessimistic consequences."
