Extremely severe cyclonic storm Amphan made a landfall between Digha in West Bengal and Hatiya island in Bangladesh. The landfall process, triggering copious rain and gusty winds, will continue for about four hours. The extremely severe cyclonic storm lay at 106 km south-southeast of Paradip, Odisha, 95 km south of Digha, West Bengal at 4:30 pm on Wednesday. Lakhs of people in West Bengal and Odisha have been evacuated from vulnerable areas and shifted to safer locations.
North coastal districts of Odisha is experiencing heavy rainfall along with west Mednipore, south and north 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hoogli and Kolkata districts of West Bengal.
Indian meteorological officials said Cyclone Amphan, which has now weakened from Super Cyclone to an Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm, observed a wind speed ranging between 180–195 km/hr as it makes landfall.
In contrast to the previous cyclones, perhaps the greatest test this time is the manner by which to shield the individuals from getting affected by the coronavirus while they are packed inside emergency shelters. "We are fighting a war on two fronts," said Rajesh Pandit, a police officer in Ndhauli village, located along India's coast. "First to evacuate people and then to make sure that they don't catch the coronavirus."
Amphan was made all the more powerful by climate change, researchers have since quite a while ago expected that tropical storms like this cyclone would increase in strength as the world warms. The government of West Bengal and Orissa have evacuated almost a large portion of a million people.
Earlier on Tuesday, NDRF chief SN Pradhan in a media briefing said that a total of 41 teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed in West Bengal and Odisha to deal with any emergency situation arising out of Super Cyclone Amphan. As per the IMD, Amphan is expected to cause considerable damage to these districts upon landfall.
