Impact of covid-19 on the mental health of specially abled individuals

The lockdown is now opening but there is a new epidemic emerging, according to a recent survey 20 percent of the Indian population is facing mental depression.

Mental depression is due to multiple reasons like unemployment, alcohol abuse, starvation, etc, and in such a scenario, the people who will be affected most will be a physically disabled group because they are mostly dependent upon others for their basic needs like food and shelter.

Specially abled people have more day to day need when compared to others. These needs range from the normal standard needs to impairment needs. Due to lockdown these people are facing a lot of challenges.

To achieve the highest level of standard health care for mentally and physically challenged groups, the following measures to be taken into consideration -

  • Strengthen national policies on health care especially for older age groups.
  • Identify and eliminates barriers and obstacles to accessibility in such facilities.
  • Train health care personnel, for dealing with such a patient's condition.
  • Empower people to take their own decision with informed consent
  • The right to access healthcare and life saving procedures must be granted to specially abled people in tough times like these

While having a disability probably does not by itself put someone at higher risk from Coronavirus, many persons with disabilities do have specific underlying conditions that make the disease more dangerous for them.

Various organisation working for the rights of specially abled people have made an immediate response call which addresses the specific needs of these people with the key agendas of their health, dignity, safety and independence in the society amidst the Covid-19 pandemic and other related health emergencies.
