LIFE OF A PERSON DEALING WITH AUTISM

Autism. What is the first thing that comes in your mind when you hear the word Autism? A mental disability with trouble understanding what ‘’normal’’ people think and feel. According to most of the people, an autistic person is someone who has expression, communication and gesture problems. Just like all the other assumptions made in this world, this is one of the most assumed things.

Autism doesn’t mean being mentally disabled, it means being mentally challenged. Which means an autistic person faces challenges with his/her mental health. Just like an ordinary person, an autistic person thinks and functions normally. It’s just that such people socialize and comfort themselves better with like people. In the same way how, non-autistic people socialize well with non-autistic people. Don’t make them feel like they are not worth your time. It’s not a tragedy or abnormality to be autistic. These are just various variations of the human brain, which should be accepted and celebrated.

When an autistic individual acts weird and scary in a shopping mall, there’s no problem with him. It’s just that shopping malls are designed in such a way that it does not cater to special people. It’s noisy, crowded and too bright which is not how a person with autism wants his surroundings to be. Along with a lot of physical challenges, an autistic person has to face the mental challenges too. Self-confidence, self-esteem, love, care, they lack a lot of things. Not because they are not capable of having it, but because the people around make them feel worthless.

We all know autistic people are different from other ordinary people but very few know how. Only if they had an answer to this question, they would know how normal an autistic person is. All they need is some special care, and attention which doesn’t make them disabled, but challenged. They are definitely different, but not difficult.
